Abstract
The funding of conservatoires in England in the nineteenth century has been
explored on an individual basis, to a greater or lesser extent, in the published histories of the various institutions. However, the subject has not been examined with reference to the activities of other similar organisations and how they compare. As the Royal College of Music (RCM) and Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM) opened within a decade of each other, in 1883 and 1893 respectively, an opportunity is provided for investigating the similarities and differences between the approaches to fundraising taken by the two colleges.
