Rhomb in Silhouette - Version for Percussion and String Quartet

Abstract

Rhomb in Silhouette (Version for Percussion and String Quartet) begins in stillness, unhurried, a slow unfolding that gradually quickens, whorling with intense energy before patiently subsiding into silence. Strings breathe life into an ever-ascending melody, tracing a diagonal path across the rhomb. Metallic resonances surround the strings, summoning the sound of the rhomb from within.

Rhomb in Silhouette responds to a brass sculpture Rhombus, 2017, developed by the artist Germaine Kruip in collaboration with Thein Brass.

Commissioned and produced by Factory International, Manchester.

First performed on 17, 18, 19 and 20 July 2025 as part of Germaine Kruip's A Possibility at the Royal Northern College of Music as part of Manchester International Festival.
