9:11/20 Memorials on the twentieth anniversary of September 11th

As part of research into Music and Commemoration, this album commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

R&D was undertaken into the memorial fence at Shanksville, PA, exploring the spontaneous offerings left by a diverse range of American communities at the crash site of United 93. The resulting 30-minute commission from Kevin Malone, “Sudden Memorials”, represents these communities through an inclusive polystylist compositional approach. In live performance, the audience is drawn into the commemorative act through theatrical gestures associated with the placing of meaningful objects as well as through performer improvisation.

The full programme, which also included pieces with related experimental techniques by Henry Cowell plus a uniquely reflective work by Scott Joplin, was premiered on the precise anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at the Wigmore Hall, and the CD recording was played on BBC Radio 3, France Musique and WNYU USA. Reviews appeared in Interlude, Records International, Scene and Fanfare magazines, and tracks were added to editorial playlists on Spotify. The multi-disciplinary nature of the project extended to visual art, with cover artwork provided by sculptor and 9/11 survivor Vanessa Lawrence.
