Person Introduction

Piers Hudson is a composer and researcher based in Kent. In his PhD studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, he seeks to expand the theory and practical application of infinite canon to free composition by employing the principles of moveable counterpoint as formulated by Russian composer and music theorist Sergey Taneyev (1856-1915).

As a composer, Piers’ music draws upon an impressionist lineage of extended harmonic colour and direct melodic expression—which ranges from Fauré to Jazz to Studio Ghibli film scores—as well as drawing upon a postminimalist lineage of creating focussed musical textures and incorporating popular musical influences. Piers infuses these influences with rigorous counterpoint, harnessing the techniques and idioms of Medieval and Renaissance polyphony, and—as pertains to his current research—the techniques of Sergei Taneyev’s moveable counterpoint.
