Performance aspects and considerations of L’ubomir Pipkov's ‘Bulgarian Suite’ Op. 2 (1928)

Pipkov composed his ‘Bulgarian Suite’, Op. 2, during his early period while
studying at the École normale de musique de Paris under Paul Dukas, who praised
the work. This presentation briefly answers why this is the first of Pipkov's piano
compositions to include the term ‘Bulgarian’ in the title. It then highlights the
Suite's significance within his broader piano output and identifies key stylistic
features that define his compositional language. The presentation also explores
the implementation and performance considerations of devices such as cluster
chords, ornamentation, and rhythm as they appear across the different
movements. Through an informed performance-practice approach, these
observations aim to guide performers interested in Pipkov's music, while drawing
attention to interpretative aspects that may differ from Western performance
traditions
